The impacts
of tourism of Colombia
Colombia
has amazing and diverse places. You can find beaches to beautiful mountains
here. Even though where I live is not a touristic area, I can still observe
some of the impacts that tourism has on my country; and I would like to talk
about them in the subsequent paragraphs.
It is
obvious that tourism promotes the economy of a country. Some towns depend on
tourism to improve their economy. Coronavirus helped us to see the importance
of tourism for our country. The available information points out a diminution
of 22% in the first trimester of 2020 (KPMG, 2020). It means that many people
lost their jobs and the way to bring food to their home. Therefore, tourism is
a significant sector for Colombia.
On the
other hand, tourism has a negative impact on our ecosystems. According to
Javier Gómez, president of the Adventure Tourism and Ecotourism Federation, the
frequent arrival of tourists to the tourist areas has been causing a negative
impact in said areas (El Tiempo, 2017). For example, many people go to the
beach during Easter. They destroy the habitat of some animals and pollute the
environment by throwing trash on the ground. In addition, there are other
ecosystems that offer resources for the communities. Some tourists destroy
them, therefore we no longer have the resources that these ecosystems provide.
Hence, tourism can cause negative impacts on nature, the place that provides us
with water and other important resources.
I think
that we need to change the concept of tourism since it can be very prejudicial
for nature and the inhabitants of a territory. We have to make it sustainable
so that people can take advantage of it gaining money, and consequently they can
also protect the ecosystems.
